About Oregon Military Museum Project:
The Brigadier General James B. Thayer Oregon Military Museum and Historic Park located at Camp Withycombe in Clackamas County, will honor the men and women who have served our state and nation in our armed forces. The world class museum complex will provide a comprehensive education resource for preserving and sharing Oregon’s rich military history.
OMMP is a 501 (c)(3) Oregon non-profit corporation founded by Tommy Thayer (KISS lead guitarist), Amy Maxwell, and James Thayer Jr. organized to raise funds necessary to complete the construction and exhibits and prepare future operations of the Oregon Military Museum. Both Tommy and James Jr. are sons to General Thayer, the museum’s namesake.
The 32,000 sq ft museum building currently under construction will include 13,000 sq ft of exhibit space. The museum’s collection includes 14,500 artifacts and 30,000 library volumes including the largest complete collection of firearms west of the Mississippi. State-of-the-art exhibits will span history from the earliest Indian warring tribes, to the first Oregon Militia in 1843, to our present day citizen soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The project budget total is $16.8 million for completion of the museum construction and exhibits. Through public and private funding $6.1 million has been raised to date with an additional $10.7 million needed to complete the project.
Brig. Gen. (Ret.) James B. Thayer, BS currently lives in Lake Oswego. Thayer grew up in Carlton, Oregon, attended the University of Oregon, and enlisted in the army after his sophomore year. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on October 3, 1944, and joined the 71st Infantry Division’s mine platoon. His life was changed forever on a day in early May 1945 when his platoon stumbled upon the Gunskirchen Lager death camp in Austria. The camp was home to 15,000 prisoners who had been abandoned by the Nazis who had fled just days earlier. As the head of the reconnaissance platoon that found the camp, Thayer received credit for its discovery and liberation, but he deflects the praise, saying, “I was just lucky to find the thing.”
