Known for its Japanese comfort food, artisanal baking and it’s 70-year-old katsu sauce recipe, Tanaka is bringing together the traditional flavors of Japan to the contemporary tastes of Portland.
The success of Tanaka’s sister restaurant in Tokyo, Kushikatsu Tanaka, inspired the tradition, quality and experience that is now being offered at the NW Portland location. As part sandwich shop and part Japanese pâtisserie, Tanka offers a wide variety of items from savory and sweet milk bread sandwiches to show-stopping desserts with locally sourced ingredients infusing flavors typically found in Japanese cuisine. While the katsu sauce is the connection to its roots in Tokyo, the milk bread (shokupan) is the star of the bakery and is a big part of their mission to bring people together through flour, water, yeast and salt.
